Simple rule of thumb:
Your code, as a whole unit, must have contrast against all the other colors added.
Do whatever you want, as long as you can achieve enough contrast between the code and the other colors or the background.
Use different layers of a plain transparent code, and the color pattern you want to use.
Contrast, contrast, contrast, ..., copy and paste, copy and paste. Even just copy and paste parts of the code, to regain or produce transparency.
But, it is learning by doing, so it's not much use, if I try to give you a lot of advice.
